DASH Middle School Cross Country Lake Denoon Meet Report 2010

Hello DASH Homeschool families,

Yesterday we ran the Lake Denoon Meet in Muskego just like we have every year since 2005. The meet with all the very big public schools and their very big teams. The meet where we have been pushed around in in the past by those very big teams. The meet where we have wilted when it was too hot. Only this year we came with a team that has been taking extra laps in practice – in their bare feet. A team that the coach can’t keep up with. A team that was ready to run in the front and stay there until the end. A team strong enough at the top to have three ‘top 5’ finishers. A team deep enough to keep their scoring way down, down low enough to take 2nd place in the 7th and under girls race, and 3rd place in the 7th and under boys race! This was the day the DASH Team officially hit the big time. A day that will always have a special place in DASH lore.

The 7th and under girls led the way. We had six DASH girls surge into the lead pack at the start, the DASH yellow showing prominently among the leaders. Sarah Klapak and Andrea Beck challenged each other for position the whole way, both breaking the girls DASH meet record, and both having to wait for their ‘top 5’ medals until the award ceremony. Yes, getting your medal at the awards ceremony. That’s a first for the DASH Team. That’s big time. That’s fun! Lucretia Nyhart and Zipporah Caspers were jockeying with each other the whole race until Lucretia put on a surge at the end to take 16th overall, Zipporah 22nd. This left us with a meager 47 points from our top four runners! In a race with 234 athletes! A monumental performance! But the heroics don’t end there. Faith Caspers finished a stunning 25th. Not bad for a 4th grader. Our sixth runner in was Gabrielle Heiss in 58th. All of our top six finished in the top quarter. Yes, that’s hitting the big time. Our future stars came in next. Renee Nuree, Gloria Heiss, and Skyler Heinz all looked good. Their day will come.

The boys were not about to let the girls have all the heroics. Their patience was being tested, having to wait for the girls to finish. The gun went off, serious DASH boys racing had begun. A sub-12 minute finished had only been accomplished once in DASH history at this meet, but no record is safe with Ransom Nyhart in the race. He ran with the lead pack of seven runners the whole way, outkicking all but three for a 4th place finish. He broke the 12 minute barrier, and (you had to be there to believe it), broke the 11 minute barrier as well. Another DASH meet record! Another medal to be received at the awards ceremony! Another chance to cheer the DASH team! But one runner does not make a team. We needed more. We got it. The rest of our boy scorers were in their first cross country race. They were out to change their monikers from track stars to running stars. Matthew LeSac went out fast and stayed fast, giving the team everything he had for a 24th place finish. Christian LeSac, the top anchor on our relay teams, ran past more people than we could keep track of, to cap another fantastic finish that put him right behind his older brother for 25th place. Glenn Kaboskey, clearly the fastest improving DASH member, came in next. He ran a very smart race, finishing 60th. This gave us 113 points which turned out be just low enough for a 3rd place finish and another reason to cheer loudly for the DASH team at the award ceremony. We have so many fast boys this year that you may have to read this over a few times to keep track of them all for the next meet. Jeremy Marek, Levi Leonard, and Dawson Miller all came in under 14 minutes for great finishes. Ben Contino was right behind them. I bet we will be using all of them in the team scoring before the season is out. This boys team is very deep, and will not be finishing in the same order as the season goes on. It will be exciting to watch. The next five to come in are our future stars, and trust me, they will be stars. Kevin Egan, 3rd grade, was the most impressive on this day. He had an amazing finish. Next came Daniel Caspers, DASH veteran and 2nd grader. He really improved on his good time from last year. Daniel Parsons, who has had some great practices this year, was next. He will go faster before the season is done. Tommy Egan in his first race looks to be coming along fine. Seth Heinz made it to the finish as well.

We did have lonely Siobhan Heiss in the 8th grade race. Wait until Grant Park next week to see her run fast. She loves that course.

Zebulon Caspers, coming off a broken toe, broke into the 12 minute range for the first time in a good showing. Nick Contino showed a lot of grit in lowering his time from last year by over a minute. Plan on sticking around until the end next week and watch these two guys. They save the big guy race until the end.

The results are posted in the Result Archive (scroll down). Photos of the race will be posted soon. Thanks to Mary Beck, Kristin Contino, Kam Caspers, and George Klapak for their help in scoring and taking pictures. Thanks to Ed Beck. The meets are always easier with Ed helping out. Ed still beats the dedicated athletes in practice, unlike the coach.

We will be racing many of the same teams next Wednesday at beautiful Grant Park on the lake. It is a great place to watch a race. Don’t miss out.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
