DASH Middle School Track 2013 Bulldog Dash Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The middle school track team was at Martin Luther High School for the annual Bulldog Dash. This two day meet was squeezed into one when they cancelled Friday night’s events. Unfortunately, the cancellation was not passed on to all the teams properly, so many of the DASH families still came on Friday night. We had to wait until Saturday to run fast.

We waited until about 9:00 for the heat sheets to arrive for the 100 meter race. Kayla Walters and Andrea Guidone led the way for the DASH team as they both made the cut to race again later in the 100 meter final. Stephanie Chu also had a great race, but finished in 9th place, just missing the finals. We fielded some very promising teams in the 4×400 and came out with some great results. The 8th grade boys were in a very competitive race. Danny Wickman, Glenn Kaboskey, and Alex Navin kept the team in good position for Christian LeSac, who sped past two other teams to claim the 3rd place ribbons. The 5th grade boys team of Foster Todd, Daniel Caspers, Leif Kostrzewa, and Wesley Evans overcame a dropped baton and a lost shoe en route to a nice 2nd place finish. The 8th grade girls team of Andrea Guidone, Lucretia Nyhart, Zipporah Caspers, and Hannah Schein all ran their best to also finish in 2nd. The team I have been waiting to see all season, Toria Schein, Kayla Walters, Faith Caspers, and Olivia Zyzo finally got together. Toria, Kayla, and Faith gave us a strong start and kept us in the lead through three laps, but the Montessori team was able to catch up to Olivia on the back stretch. After a few steps, Olivia sped off and won handily for an exciting DASH victory. We were able to put three girls in the 200 meter finals. Sophia Zyzo, Gulla Kemmann, and Andrea Guidone all had great races to earn the right to race again later. We thought we had Danny Wickman in the finals, but due to a scoring error he was later put in 10th place. More ribbons were won in the medley relay where the athletes run 100, 100, 200, and 400 meter legs. The 7th grade girls team of Gulla Kemmann, Olivia Zyzo, Faith Caspers, and Grace Dupar placed 6th in a very tough field. The 6th grade girls team of Abby Chu, Abigail Larkin, Kayla Walters, and Toria Schein claimed 5th place, and the 7th grade boys team of John Klaves, Christopher Fossell, Wesley Evans, and Joshua Anumolu moved up late to earn a hard-fought 3rd place finish. The cross country mile was one of the teams best events. Glenn Kaboskey and Daniel Caspers ran to 7th place finishes, as did Julianna Caspers, who displayed a great kick at the end and continues to improve with every race. Abigail Larkin ran strong and earned 5th place. Leif Kostrzewa put on an inspired late charge to claim 4th place, while Zipporah Caspers started strong and coasted in for 4th. Lucretia Nyhart showed how the 1600 meters is her best race as she ran to a 3rd place finish. Faith Caspers was our first girl to the finish line earning the 6th grade 3rd place ribbon. Christian LeSac set the pace early and ran in the lead pack throughout. In the end he battled to a 2nd place finish, way ahead of third. Andrea Guidone and Kayla Walters were next, both sprinting to impressive 5th place finishes in the 100 meter finals. It is nice to have so many good sprinters on the team this year. Our 4×100 relay times all placed. Our young 5th grade boys team of Daniel Caspers, Elijah Anumolu, Leif Kostrzewa, and Wesley Evans finished 7th. Olivia Zyzo, Abby Chu, Sophia Zyzo, and Faith Caspers, out 6th grade girls team, looked very fast as they ran to the 3rd place ribbons. The 8th grade girls team of Andrea Guidone, Simran Khunger, Zipporah Caspers, and Hannah Schein was equally impressive as they also ran to a 3rd place finish. In the 200 meter finals, Sophia Zyzo and Gulla Kemmann unfortunately were not at their best. It was their first time running in a final heat. Hopefully they will get to do it again. Andrea Guidone, running in her 5th race of the day, was able to keep her great day going with a strong 5th place finish in her 200 meter heat. The 800 meters was shifted from Friday night to the last race of the day. Fortunately there were plenty of DASH fans left to witness it, as the DASH distance runners put on quite a show. Leif Kostrzewa ran to an 8th place finish, edging Daniel Caspers at the finish. Glenn Kaboskey also posted an 8th place finish. John Klaves was a late write in, trying the 800 meters for the first time. He looked like a veteran as he held his place down the stretch to finish 7th. Hannah Schein finished 5th in a close 8th grade girls race. Simran Khunger came from way back in the last 100 meters to move all the way up to 3rd place, impressing all the DASH fans. Joshua Anumolu looked great as usual, posting a great time and earning a 2nd place finish. Zipporah Caspers led through one lap, and was able to hold off a charging pack at the end for a 2nd place finish. Faith Caspers had her sights on 2nd in the home stretch and made it there a step before the finish line to give the DASH team yet another 2nd place finish. Christian LeSac capped off the day of racing with a dominating win in the 8th grade boys race. He won by about 100 meters. The coaches were talking about his race after the meet.

John Klaves earned his first long jump ribbon with an 8th place jump. Danny Wickman’s jump was good for 7th place among the 8th graders. Foster Todd and Glenn Kaboskey both had 4th place jumps as they continue to excel at that event. In the shot put, Christopher Fossell had his best showing by far this year, with a throw good for 2nd place. Gulla Kemmann had no peer in the 7th grade shot put as she earned herself and the DASH team top honors.

We also had four athletes in the pentathlon. These athletes showed off their wide array of athletic talents, competing in the long jump, shot put or softball throw, 100 meter, 400 meter, and 1600 meter races. These events were very competitive this year as always, and our group held up very well. The 8th grade boys group was the biggest with about 14 athletes. Samuel Zinkgraf looked especially good in the running events and placed 9th. Joe Hughes never had a letdown all day and was able to capture 6th place. Joshua LeSac was in a tough 5th grade division. He gave his best in every event and gets a 7th place ribbon for his efforts. Grace Zinkgraf’s field events were especially good, and she also ran well in the 100 meters, giving the team some nice 3rd place points.

We ran hard and posted good results all day long. That is not easy to do, but we did it. While waiting for the ribbons after the meet I was able to get us into another meet for next week. I guess I want to see this team run some more. Thanks go out to Kenli Couppee for helping with the timing in the morning. Thanks to Ken and Lindy Zinkgraf for refilling the water cooler. We finished the day strong and I am sure that was one of the reasons why. Thanks to the LeSac’s for bringing their tent. It stays so much cooler than mine. Thanks to the camera lady, as well as Zipporah Caspers and Maria Walters for getting the photos. I thought they were good and posted a lot of them. Special thanks to all those who arrived on Friday night only to find out about the cancellation. Thanks for making the most of it and enjoying each other’s company. It is the families that make this team special. We are nearing the end of the season now. We are in shape and running well. Let’s stay healthy and finish on a high note.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
