DASH High School Track 2014 Shoreland Lutheran Pacer Relays Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school track team was down in Kenosha on Friday to participate in the Pacer Relays, hosted by our friends at Shoreland Lutheran. The Pacer Relays is a very competitive 16 team varsity meet. With a team our size, putting a meet like this on the schedule can keep a coach nervous for months. We ended up bringing 15 athletes to compete, plus a tent to keep us a little warmer. This was a high school meet so, yes, the weather was cold with spots of rain. But as the afternoon turned into evening, the tent was used a little less. The hard running and good results had kept us warm.

As the 4×200 girls team got out of the tent to get the days running started, there was a long delay. The timing system was not working. We were back to being cold. Finally the gun went off and the team of Renee Walters, Amelie Kemmann, Anna Seidl, and Zipporah Caspers ran to a 7th place finish giving us our first points of the day. Our boys 4×200 team of Danny Wickman, Zebulon Caspers, Tommy Ebert, and Justin Chu found out how fast some of the other varsity teams can run. It would not be an easy day for our sprinting teams. The Distance Medley was next with an 800, 400, 1200, 1600 meter format. Hannah Schein ran a very good first leg for the girls. Johannah Lee kept us in good position after her 400. Zipporah Caspers was next and she posted a very good time in her 3 laps. Anchor Andrea Beck took the baton for the last 1600 meters and moved us up into 5th place by the finish. It was a great effort by the girls. Joe Hughes got the boys team off to a good start, which Danny Wickman held in his lap. Ransom Nyhart was then able to move the team up in his 1200, putting us in good position for Jacob Dickman to finish things and push us all the way up to 4th place when it was done. Well done, boys! After a break, the team was back for the Sprint Medley, run in a 100, 100, 200, 400 format. Renee Walters started as usual for the girls, followed by Anna Seidl. Amelie Kemmann gave us a great 200 as usual, and Johannah Lee ran another fast 400 to complete the two laps. Danny Wickman started again for the boys, with Tommy Egan running the second 100. Zeb Caspers got the call for the 200, and Justin Chu ran the 400 leg. The boys finished in under two minutes, and beat one team which is not easy to do in the sprints at this meet. Our girls 4×800 team was seeded higher than any of our other team, so our expectations were high for the girls. Hannah Schein and Andrea Beck went first because they were also in the 4×400 to come. Hannah and Andrea did all that was expected in their four laps and at the half-way point we were running in second place. Anna Seidl ran the third leg, and posted a good time, but we did get passed by a good Brookfield Academy team. Zipporah Caspers ran the last two laps fast enough to hold off all the other teams. The third place medals were ours. Our boys’ team was also very good. Joe Hughes kept us in good position at the start. Then with Ransom Nyhart and Jacob Dickman running the middle legs, the team had made its way all the way up to third place. Justin Chu ran his 800 faster than he ever has before to cap off a great 5th place team finish. This race was very competitive. To finish this far up in the standings took all four athletes to run 2:30 or less. The 4×400 was our last relay of the day. The girls team of Amelie Kemmann, Johannah Lee, Hannah Schein, and Andrea Beck stayed very competitive the whole way to earn the 7th place points. The boys team of Zebulon Caspers, Joe Hughes, Ransom Nyhart, and Jacob Dickman ran to a 4:08 time, missing the DASH record by less than a second. In this meet, that was good for 9th. Yes, the competition was very good.

Our long jumpers all struggled again, but our shot put teams did very well. The girls team of Amelie Kemmann, Renee Walters, and Anna Seidl were strong enough to finish in the points with an 8th place finish. Zebulon Caspers and Joe Hughes both threw for personal bests, with Samuel Lee just missing.

Relay meets keep the athletes working together, and can add extra excitement to a meet. This meet surely fit into that category. Being able to get plenty of healthy athletes to the meet and running their best definitely left the coach much relieved. Let’s hope the team stays competitive enough to add a meet like this every year. I still talk about the last time we ran this meet three years ago, and I know I will be talking about this meet for a long time, too. It definitely was another great day in DASH history.

Thanks to all the athletes who made special arrangements to get their schedule clear for this meet. Thanks to the parents for getting the athletes down to Kenosha. Thanks to the picture lady for getting the photos. Relay meets are especially challenging to get good photos, and the camera battery died before the 4×400, but the rest of the photos turned out great. And thanks to Lisa Dickman and Mary Beck for being our exchange zone volunteers. We now have just two meets left for the high school team. Hopefully we will get a chance to see how this team can run in warm weather before the season is done.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
