DASH Middle School Track 2014 MQS Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH middle school track team was found at Nathan Hale High School on Saturday, competing in the Phoenix Invite hosted by Mary Queen of Saints. We had about our smallest team ever for a big Saturday meet, so those who were there got to compete in plenty of events. Some of the athletes struggled on the blustery, sunny day. Others proved they were ready to compete with the other teams best athletes. Those who made it to the end got to compete in the 4×100 relays which capped off a nice day of DASH racing.

The field events went first. Alexa Dawson’s long jump went 9’09” and was good for the fourth place ribbon. Faith Caspers went past 11 feet, and Kayla Walters finally landed after 12’07”, the third longest jump in DASH history. Wes Evans and Joshua LeSac led the boys, with Wes leaping past 12 feet. Zachary Werner was our top softball thrower, and Mary LeSac threw it the farthest among our first graders. Gulla Kemmann and Lucretia Nyhart flexed their muscles and both placed in the top-6 in the shot put.

We had three athletes make the finals of the 100 meters, and they all ran better in the finals than in the prelims. Alexa Dawson and Gulla Kemmann finished in fourth place overall, while Daniel Hubert moved up to third place and set a new DASH record of 13.06. Now Daniel has his eyes set on his older brother’s 200 meter record. We had a strong showing in the 1600 meter race. Julianna Caspers led the way with a 3rd place finish. Faith Caspers effort was good for 5th, and Angela Walters placed 6th in the 5th grade race. Grace Caspers raced to 7th place running as a 6th grader. Joshua LeSac was our lone boy running the 1600 and looked good in finishing 6th. We got to see Abbey Novak run her first 400 meter race, and she did not disappoint with her 1:30 time. Abby Chu and Lucretia Nyhart also looked good as they broke 1:20. Daniel Hubert ran a fast 1:07, while Wes Evans earned the 2nd place ribbon in the 6th grade division. Stephanie Chu made it back to the meet after a violin audition and placed 7th in the 200. Gulla Kemmann followed with a 6th place 33.16. Daniel Hubert ran in a fast 200 heat and would not be beaten, giving the DASH team a 200 meter victory. We ran four 4×100 meter relays at the end of the day. Nathaniel Chu was eyed by the coach and was given a yellow jersey. He ran a fast first leg for the boys, before handing the baton to Luke Smrecek. Joshua LeSac and Max Johnston finished up for the boys. Our 5th grade girls team of Stephanie Chu, Abbey Novak, Angela Walters, and Alexa Dawson was very good. Stephanie Chu also joined the 7th grade team, along with Abby Chu, Lizzy Johnston, and Faith Caspers. It was the first time we ever used the same person in different heats of the same relay. The 8th grade team of Lucretia Nyhart, Kayla Walters, Mia Wickman, and Gulla Kemmann posted the fastest time of the day.

This team now has two weeks to practice hard and peak for the final two meets. The weather will be getting warmer, and the times will need to keep getting lower if we want to add to our ribbon collection. We have a lot of stars on this team that ran like stars, yet we did not win any relay ribbons. Our small team did not have the depth needed for that. Hopefully we will have closer to our full team for the last two races so we can run to our full potential.

Thanks to all the MQS volunteers who worked so hard getting everything lined up properly for a meet of this size. Thanks to our timing volunteers, Basia and Wade Lindberg, and Jodi LeSac. Thanks to Ed Beck who put in a long day of coaching with me. Thanks to the girls on the high school team who took the pictures. I hope it is appreciated by everyone because it is a lot of work. The photos were taken on Andrea Beck’s camera. She then gets to go through them all and upload the good ones for me to see. Then I get to do the final editing and cropping so that they look great on the Flickr site. I hope everyone checks them out. We now have just three weeks left in the season. Things are moving fast. It is time to finish strong.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
