DASH High School Track 2014 Waukesha South Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

An ‘Old-Fashioned’ track meet is where you just show up and compete in any, and as many, events as you like. That was the setting for the DASH high school track team on Thursday at Waukesha South high school. For the first time this season the team had no need for warm blankets. It was a great day to get a fast time on a post-it note.

With the coach not having to turn in a roster for this meet, he was out making sure the athletes had a full slate of events planned for the day. The hurdles were the first event of the day and Brady Klaves was the first daring volunteer to check in. Brady did very good in his first try at 110 meters. He liked them enough to also do the 300 meter hurdles later. The next volunteer was DASH star Amelie Kemmann. Between the old-fashioned meet format and the coaches prodding, Amelie could not resist getting in the starting blocks. She naturally went out with the leaders, but was slowed in the middle when she hit a hurdle pretty hard. She continued through them and set a DASH record while finishing second in her heat. When it was over she realized that she had hurt herself worse than she thought. Her day was finished. Some coaching decisions seem good at the time, but in the end turn out to be not worth the risk.

But we did more than just hurdles, Nina Smrecek, Renee Walters and Stefanie Klaves all raced in the same 100 heat with Nina staying just ahead in a very close race. All the boys had personal bests in the 100 with Joe Hughes and Nicholas Funk in the 12’s. The times in the 1600 were slowed by the heat, but Andrea Beck ran with the leaders, and Jacob Dickman set the pace throughout the boys race, and held off a strong charge at the end for another victory. Johannah Lee arrived just as the 400 meter races were setting up and ran a 1:15 lap to lead the girls. Joe Hughes led the boys 400 runners, edging Justin Chu by less than a second. Tommy Ebert lowered his best time by two seconds as he continues to improve, and Samuel Lee also had a personal record. The girls fielded two very competitive 4×100 teams, and they ran in the same race. Kristin Ulfeng and Hannah Schein ran even with Johannah Lee and Stefanie Klaves through 200 meters. Nina Smrecek took the baton from Stefanie and got ahead of Zipporah Caspers before handing off to Anna Seidl. But Andrea Beck took over the race in the end to get her team to the finish line first. These were the 2nd and 4th fastest teams the DASH team ever ran! We only fielded one 4×100 boys team, but the DASH record stood no chance once they got going. Danny Wickman got things started, with Samuel Zinkgraf and Joe Hughes running the middle legs. Nicholas Funk finished up and got the post-it note. The DASH record is now three seconds lower. The clouds were out and the weather turned perfect for the 800 meter race, and Zipporah Caspers and Anna Seidl took advantage of it, both cutting off five seconds from their personal bests. Justin Chu, Joe Hughes, and Samuel Zinkgraf all ran well and finished within a couple seconds of each other in the boys 800. Johannah Lee was the only girl who ran the 200. The coach was slowing down getting people to run lots of events. We had four boys run the 200, including Joe Hughes who was finally slowing down after running almost every event. Danny Wickman set a personal best, and Nicholas Funk impressed everyone by winning his heat and just missing breaking the DASH record with his 25.35 time.  We did few field events this meet. One highlight was Renee Walters finally breaking the DASH shot put record. She has been close for a long time. Her throw of 24’7.25″ is now in the record books.

The team ran very well overall. A few of the girls are complaining of some injuries, but hopefully they will be ready for our final meet on May 20th. The team is fun to watch, and the pictures show that the athletes enjoy a day of racing. Thanks to my wife, who was the picture lady for the meet. Thanks to Waukesha South for running such a nice old-fashioned meet. Thanks to the parents who got the athletes to the meet.  It was a struggle this time with three families having car trouble. Hudson Nyhart was the only disappointment as he was stranded. We now have 12 days to practice and get ready to peak for the last meet. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
