DASH Middle School Track 2014 Bulldog Dash Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The middle school track team got to try out the recently resurfaced track at Martin Luther High School last weekend at the 10th annual Bulldog Dash. It was unusually cool this year, but the team found the track to their liking and posted their best results of the season.

On Friday night in the 200 preliminaries the boys ran first. Caleb Alles was our first athlete to earn the right to race in the finals. Daniel Hubert went under 28 seconds to win his heat, and Joshua Anumolu raced to a 7th place finish in the 8th grade division. Unfortunately for Joshua he would not be able to come to the meet the next day. Stephanie Chu just missed the finals last year, but this year she proved too fast to be kept out. Kayla Walters had her best 200 time of the year to earn her spot in the finals, and Simran Khunger impressed us with the fastest time of the day to also make it. In the Friday night field events, Stephanie Chu jumped 10’3″ to place 5th overall, and Faith Caspers jumped to her personal best to place 8th. Isaac Johnson’s jump was good for 10th place overall. Caleb Alles threw the softball 93 feet to earn the 6th place ribbon. All the discus practicing Andre Coulter and Elijah Anumolu have put in paid off. Andre’s throw was good for 3rd place, with Elijah right behind in 6th. Daniel Hubert threw the shot put over 37 feet to take 2nd, and Joshua Anumolu muscled his way to the 8th place ribbon. The 800 meter races ended the night. Joshua Anumolu took charge of the 7th grade race early and was never threatened. His 2:40 gave us our first victory. John Klaves raced for the first time this year and placed 7th. In the 5th grade girls race Julianna Caspers raced ahead after the first turn and held everyone off the rest of the way for an impressive victory. Abbey Novak made it a 1-2 finish for the DASH team with her strong showing. After some victory congratulations, the excitement continued as Faith Caspers ran to her personal best to take 3rd in the 7th grade race. Kayla Walters raced in soon after and placed 6th. We were racking up the team points now. Simran Khunger and Lucretia Nyhart finished 5th and 7th in a very competitive 8th grade race to end the great night of racing.

Saturday morning started with the 100 meter preliminaries and our girl sprinters were ready. Stephanie Chu and Alexa Dawson both earned their spot in the 5th grade finals, and Kayla Walters and Gulla Kemmann posted their best times of the year to also make it. Isaac Johnson and Luke Smrecek just missed for the boys. We had two good teams in the 4×400 relay. Our 5th grade team of Stephanie Chu, Abbey Novak, Angela Walters, and Julianna Caspers fought to a 3rd place finish. The 8th grade team of Lucretia Nyhart, Kayla Walters, Abby Chu, and Faith Caspers posted a 5:14 time and took the 2nd place ribbons. In the sprint medlay relay, the team of Alexa Dawson, Angela Walters, Stephanie Chu, and Abbey Novak raced to an impressive 2nd place finish. The boys team of Isaac Johnson, Joshua LeSac, Daniel Caspers, and Elijah Johnson earned five team points by finishing 4th. Our 8th grade girls team of Gulla Kemmann, Abby Chu, Kayla Walters, and Faith Caspers piled on some more points with their 3rd place finish. Faith Caspers came back and finished 10th overall in the cross country mile and placed 2nd in the 7th grade division. Julianna Caspers put up an amazing time of 6:49 to break the 7 minute barrier for the first time, and Angela Walters lowered her best time to 7:35. These girls can run. Joshua LeSac was our first boy to finish the mile and placed 3rd among the 5th grade pentathletes. Daniel Caspers ran to a 4th place finish. Pentathletes Joshua Lipski and Zachary Werner stayed close throughout in their first 1600 race. They both ran very hard and may get to run it again. In the 200 finals, Stephanie Chu moved up to 3rd overall and broke 35 seconds. Kayla Walters showed off her speed in a tight race to finish 4th, and Gulla Kemman ran for Simran and took 6th. Caleb Alles ran over a second faster in his 200 final, and Daniel Hubert raced to a personal best 27.36. That is close to the DASH record. In the 100 finals Stephanie Chu and Alexa Dawson lined up together for the 5th grade race. Stephanie was able to stay ahead and place 4th with Alexa just a step behind in 6th. Kayla Walters once again ran her best and placed 5th, and Gulla Kemmann earned the 6th place ribbon. The 400 was next and Abbey Novak added another 2nd place finish to her breakout meet. She is now officially a DASH star. Elijah Johnson ran to an 8th place finish among the 6th graders. Lizzy Johnston lowered her best time by almost 7 seconds with some good racing, and Faith Caspers ran one more time and was able to place 7th in the 8th grade race. Daniel Hubert finished his lap in 1:01 to easily win his heat and capped off his day with a 2nd place finish. We had four boys stay to the end to run the 4×100 relay. Isaac Johnson, Daniel Caspers, Joshua LeSac, and Max Johnston will get an extra ribbon for putting in overtime.

Zachary Werner, Joshua LeSac, and Joshua Lipski long jumped, threw the softball, ran the cross country mile, along with the 100 and 400 meter races in the pentathlon. Joshua LeSac’s hard work paid off with the 4th place ribbon. Zachary Werner and Joshua Lipski are in their first season, yet they were able to stay strong to the end. They both set personal records in the 400 meter race to cap off a great day. The coach is glad he picked these guys to be our pentathletes.

So much to write about. So many great results! This was definitely the meet we have been waiting for from the middle school team. Fortunately, there is one more meet left on the schedule. Oh, yes. I forgot to mention that the girls took home the 5th place trophy. Only the really big teams were able to stay ahead of us. It was a great meet, and we get to do it all again next week. I hope to see you there.

Thanks to all the DASH high schoolers who volunteered with the timing and starting. Yes, Andrea Beck was given the starting horn and she made the most of it. Thanks for the parents for getting the kids to the meet and ready to run. Thanks to the picture lady who got some great photos on our new camera. Thanks to Ed Beck for his coaching assistance. His help with the long jumpers at practice is really paying off. Now we are down to our final week with one more chance to make the most of this season. Let’s stay healthy and run fast to the finish.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
