DASH High School Track 2014 WI School for the Deaf Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school track and field team completed their season on Tuesday in Delavan at a meet hosted by our friends at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. Our goal was to finish the season with our best showing of the year, and to accumulate enough team points to come out on top in the team standings. There was one more team this year than last year. We would have to be at our best to achieve our goals.

The Wisconsin School for the Deaf always starts out well in the field events and this year was no exception. Our boys team was able to stay close with Hudson Nyhart and Ransom Nyhart finishing 1-2 in the high jump. Nicholas Funk jumped over 16 feet to soar to a 2nd place finish in the long jump, and it took a personal best 14-9.5 jump from Danny Wickman to lock down 4th. Sam Zinkgraf had a good discus throw of over 61 feet, and our shot put team of Brady Klaves, Joe Hughes, and Samuel Lee all threw to personal bests, but were still humbled by the big guys on the host team. The girls field events were very good. Stephanie Klaves won the long jump by over a foot with her outstanding 13-10 jump. Hannah Schein and Johanna Lee’s jumps proved good enough for 3rd and 4th place. Andrea Beck and Zipporah Caspers threw the discus farther than all but the host team’s girls. In the shot put, Amelie Kemmann and Renee Walters both went over 23 feet. Nina Smrecek threw the shot for the first time and did well.

The running events were next. It was time to start accumulating the points needed to win. The boys 4×800 team of Joe Hughes, Samuel Zinkgraf, Ransom Nyhart, and Justin Chu got a nice warmup run in as they ran solo. They added 8 team points to our score for their effort. Brady Klaves was next and he took 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles. Amelie Kemmann, Stefanie Klaves, and Renee Walters all lined up in the final heat of the 100 meters. Amelie proved to be too fast for the field as usual, and Stefanie and Renee finished in the points with 3rd and 5th place finishes. The boys were jittery at the 100 meter start with two boys getting DQ’d, including our own Danny Wickman. Hudson Nyhart stayed calm and broke 13 seconds, and Nicholas Funk was edged out at the finish line by .02 second to take 2nd place with a time of 12.18. The heat was out for the 1600 which saw Andrea Beck run to an easy victory. Zipporah Caspers finished in 6:42 to capture 3rd. Jacob Dickman set an early pace that no one would match as he gave the team another victory. Joe Hughes and Samuel Zinkgraf both set personal records with some good runs. Both of our 4×200 relay teams came out on top in close races with the Homeschool Eagles. Brady Klaves, Danny Wickman, and Justin Chu kept the boys team close, and then Nicholas Funk took the baton and was first to the finish line. The girls team of Renee Walters, Stefanie Klaves, and Johannah Lee gave us a great start and Nina Smrecek gave us a strong finish to win the girls race. Hannah Schein, Kristin Ulfeng, and Johannah Lee finished 3-4-5 in the 400 for the girls. Samuel Zinkgraf was back on the track with little rest to run another lap, and a much less tired Samuel Lee tied his personal record in the 400. Renee Walters, Stefanie Klaves, and Zipporah Caspers put us a step ahead in the 4×100 relay, but the last handoff between Zipporah and Nina Smrecek was not clean and the host team girls sped past us and we finished in 2nd. Andrea Beck started slow in the 800, but finished fast for a 2nd place finish. Hannah Schein started her kick a little late but broke 3 minutes. Ransom Nyhart charged out to a big lead which he never relinquished to post an impressive victory in his 800. Jacob Dickman held off the rest of the field to give us a nice 1-2 finish. Justin Chu gave us three in the top-5 with his 2:31 time. Amelie Kemmann ran a low 27 to win once again in the 200. Nina Smrecek followed in 32 seconds flat to take 4th place. Danny Wickman looked good to win his 200 heat. In the next heat, the top four stayed very close with Nicholas Funk capturing 2nd place and Hudson Nyhart 4th. The last race was the 4×400. The girls team of Amelie Kemmann, Hannah Schein, Johannah Lee, and Andrea Beck were not threatened by the host team and went out a winner. The boys race was expected to be close and it was. Hudson Nyhart ran the first leg and posted the team’s fastest split to give the team an early lead. After Ransom Nyhart’s lap the lead had increased to about 15 meters. The Homeschool Eagles had stacked their better runners at the end so it was important that we kept them behind us at this point. Joe Hughes was next, and to the Eagles disappointment, Joe increased the lead to about 20 meters. Jacob Dickman took the baton, but was chased down at about the 200 mark. Jacob stayed a couple steps ahead around the last turn, setting up a charge to the finish. Every surge the Eagles gave, Jacob had an answer for. He would not be passed. The boys finished in 4 minutes flat, being pushed to a DASH record and a great victory. It was an amazing way to finish the season.

The team scores were finalized and the DASH girls were on top again this year. And for the first time in team history, the boys finished on top as well. It was what we were shooting for, and it is what the team was able to achieve. This team had great balance between distance runners and sprinters this year, and the season culminated in what was described as a ‘mushroom cloud of awesomeness’ by one Amelie Kemmann. Very well said.

Thanks to all the DASH fans who made their way to Delavan to cheer on this team. Thanks to the people at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf who did all the work that goes into putting on a meet. Thanks to the picture lady for getting the photos that captured the moment. It has been a great season and now it is time to enjoy the moment. But not too long. Cross country season will be upon us before you know it.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
