Hello DASH families,

The high school girls track team opened the 2015 DASH season with an indoor meet at Waukesha South High School on Friday night. This is a very early meet, and with unlimited entries, it lets the coach run everyone hard.

Our girls 4×880 team of Andrea Coulter, Zipporah Caspers, Jessy Homa, and Johannah Lee got the racing started. Andrea took the baton first and posted the team’s fastest split to give us an early lead. Zipporah was then able to increase the lead to over half a lap. From there, Jessy and Johannah had no problems staying ahead to the finish line, giving the DASH team its first victory of the season. In the 60 yard race, Renee Walters got off the blocks fast and won her heat. Kayla Bruton was seeded into the final heat, and proved she belonged there, by posting a time of just a shade over 8 seconds. Johannah Lee and Bekka Homa ran head-to-head in a 440 heat. Johannah was the early pacesetter with Bekka just a couple steps behind. Bekka made a charge before the last turn, but Johannah showed her mettle and would not be passed. Renee Walters, Zipporah Caspers, Jessy Homa, and Kayla Bruton were next in the 4 lap relay. Renee, Zipporah, and Jessy kept the race pretty close before handing off to Kayla. Kayla then started closing the gap quickly, but the race proved to be just a little too short. Andrea Coulter, Zipporah Caspers, and Jessy Homa all ran in the fast heat of the 880 yard race. They all got off to good starts, but all having run earlier in the 4×880, slowed up some near the end, but all posted respectable times. In a repeat of the 60 yard race, Renee Walters won her heat in the 200 meter race. Kayla Bruton then showed off her speed by winning the next heat in a time of 30.71. After a little coaxing, Andrea Coulter, Zipporah Caspers, Kayla Bruton, and Johannah Lee came out for an encore 4×400 relay to finish the day’s racing.

In field events, Johannah Lee long jumped 21 inches farther than she ever has in competition before, and Renee Walters smashed her own DASH shot put record with a throw of over 25 feet. Very nice!

We have a lot of racing ahead of us in the next 8 weeks. This meet was very encouraging, but it also exposed some areas that we will be working on. The girls now have four weeks to get ready for the outdoor season. It is going to be interesting to find out how good this team will be.

Thanks to Danny Wickman and Zebulon Caspers for volunteering to run the high jump, which was the DASH team’s responsibility. Thanks to Ed Beck for his help with the coaching. Thanks to the DASH fans who cheered on the team from up in the bleachers. We need to get them to wear DASH yellow so we can find them more easily. We had some camera issues and missed some races, but thanks go out to Rachel Wickman and Faith Caspers for being the DASH photographers and getting some photos. And thanks to Renee Walters for the use of her camera, at least until the battery ran out and we had to finish up with mine. The high school boys are next on the indoor schedule. We have a lot of racing to go. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
