DASH High School Track 2015 Pacer Relays Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The high school track team was at the very competitive Pacer Relay meet on Friday. This is the meet that the coach is always worried about, but if the team comes in healthy, and we can get everyone there, it can also be the meet that is the most memorable of the season. The weather was perfect this year. It was time to put the team to the test.

The boys were entered in the 4×1600 relay. The top three teams get medals at this meet, and we were seeded tied for 3rd, so our hopes were high. Justin Chu got the team off to a great start, and into 2nd place with a 5:15 split, but the race was still close. Samuel Zinkgraf ran the second 1600 leg in a nice 5:33. At this point, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places were just a few steps apart. Joe Hughes got the call next. His 5:25 split was able to put us comfortably into 2nd, and about 15 seconds behind the good Martin Luther team. Jacob Dickman ran the anchor leg. His 5:02 split kept us close to Martin Luther, and over a minute ahead of the other teams. The boys had earned the 2nd place medals. The girls 4×200 team of Renee Walters, Stefanie Klaves, Johannah Lee, and Kayla Bruton ran exactly their seed time for a good 6th place finish. The boys 4×200 team of Jeremy Marek, Nicholas Funk, Noah Evans, and Ransom Nyhart ran three seconds faster than their seed time, but still finished 12th. The sprint events for the boys are amazingly tough. The girls distance medley was one of our hopes for a medal. Andrea Coulter kept the team close to the lead with her 800 leg. Jessy Homa ran a nice 400 leg. We were in the top-5, and in contention. Zipporah Caspers ran the 1200 leg and kept us in the top-5 with a big lead over 6th. Andrea Beck then took the baton and was able to move us up to 4th at the finish. The girls were 8 seconds faster than I thought they would be. We were having a good day. The same boys who ran the 4×1600 relay were back running the distance medley. Joe Hughes got the boys distance team out to a good start, moving up in the 2nd lap, and getting the baton to Samuel Zinkgraf for a fast 400 lap. As good as the boys ran, we were only in 7th with seven laps to go. Justin Chu ran the 1200 meter leg and left us in 6th place, but three of the teams ahead of us were still in our sights. Jacob Dickman then took the baton for the 1600 leg. After his first three laps we were still in 6th, but the distance between 3rd and 6th was only about 50 meters. On the last turn Jacob started making his move and had got us into 5th with 100 meters to go. With 50 meters left, Jacob had passed another team and was just a step behind 3rd. The last 40 meters Jacob went step-for-step with the Riverside athlete, and found just enough left to lean in ahead by .04 seconds. The 3rd place medals were ours! Now the day we were having was becoming epic. As we exhaled, the girls 4×100 team prepared for their lap. Renee Walters, Stefanie Klaves, Bekka Homa, and Kayla Bruton ran to the DASH Team’s second fastest 4×100 time ever. Their 1:01 was good for 6th place. In the boys 4×100, Jeremy Marek gave us a good start, and Samuel Lee gave us a good finish, but Nicholas Funk and Ransom Nyhart missed their exchange. We hit our seed time in the girls sprint medley which means the team of Bekka Homa, Stefanie Klaves, Renee Walters, and Johannah Lee ran well. The boys sprint medley went way under their seed time. Samuel Zinkgraf, Jeremy Marek, Nicholas Funk, and Ransom Nyhart showed off their speed and were very competitive, and all the handoffs were clean. The girls medaled in the 4×800 relay last year, but were seeded 5th this year, so it would be tough to repeat. Andrea Coulter did not run her best, but kept us in contention early. Andrea Beck moved the team up to 5th with her 2:42 split. Zipporah Caspers and anchor Jessy Homa then held our spot the rest of the way with some very good splits. The girls again exactly matched their seed time. In the boys 4×800, Joe Hughes had enough left to give us a 2:23 split. Justin Chu ran the second leg with a nice 2:27 split. It had become a 6-team race and we were one of the 6. Noah Evans gave us a personal best 2:38 split before letting Jacob Dickman finish. Jacob moved us into 5th place early, and that is where his 2:22 split left us. It was a great day for the boys. The girls 4×400 team was still left. Andrea Coulter, Kayla Bruton, Zipporah Caspers, and Andrea Beck all had great times and beat their seed time by over 10 seconds. We would finish the day with another 4th place finish.

We also did well in the field events. Samuel Zinkgraf broke his DASH record set the day before in the discus. 71-08 is the new record. Jeremy Marek and Noah Evans backed Samuel up as the boys took 8th place. Kayla Bruton broke 13 feet in the long jump. Stefanie Klaves and Johanna Lee also jumped far enough for the girls to place 7th. The girls discus team of Renee Walters, Andrea Beck, and Zipporah Caspers combined for a 5th place finish. That is the highest field event placement we have ever had at this meet. The boys shot put team of Joe Hughes, Noah Evans, and Samuel Zinkgraf just missed a top-8 placement. In the boys long jump, Nicholas Funk broke a 7-year old DASH record with his incredible jump of 18-02. Justin Chu and Jeremy Marek also had personal bests, giving the team the 8th place points.

I was not sure how this team would stack up compared to last year’s team. Now I know. It is better. Thanks go out to all the athletes for helping calm the nerves I get over this meet. Thanks to Ed Beck for his help with the coaching. Thanks to Lisa Dickman for her help in getting the athletes their splits. Thanks to everyone for setting up and taking down the tent. And thanks to Shoreland Lutheran for hosting such a great meet. Relay meets can be a challenge to photograph, but the camera lady did a great job getting the photos. Our next meet is this Thursday, with only one meet left after that. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
