DASH High School Track 2015 WI School for the Deaf Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school track and field team finished their season last Tuesday in Delavan in a meet hosted by the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. With two teams backing out at the last minute, we were left racing mainly the host team and one of our natural rivals, the Homeschool Eagles. We had our full girls team on hand to try to win the team title for the third year in a row. The task would be harder for the boys as they would end up running very short-handed. The weather was perfect for a fast day of racing. In fact, the racing proved so fast that the meet ended up taking less than two hours to complete.

The field events started at 3:30. Andrea Beck threw the discus 69-10 to give us an early victory. Nina Smrecek threw her discus over 10 feet farther than she ever has to place 3rd, with Zipporah Caspers right behind in 4th. Noah Evans placed 4th in the shot-put with a throw of over 28 feet. Samuel Lee had a personal best throw of 24-07. Renee Walters impressively won the girls shot put by over three feet. Jeremy Marek and Noah Evans placed 3-4 in the discus, both throwing over 64 feet. Kayla Bruton won the girls long jump by one inch, while Stefanie Klaves missed 3rd by just an inch. Johannah Lee had her best outdoor jump of the season to place 5th. Nicholas Funk’s 15-04 jump only placed him 3rd, with Justin Chu placing 4th. Johannah Lee finished 2nd in the triple jump with a personal best 24-08.75.

The running started before our full team had arrived. Nina Smrecek filled in and ran anchor on the girls 4×800 team which placed 2nd. Johannah Lee, Jessy Homa, and Zipporah Caspers had the baton first. Kayla Bruton easily won the 100 meter race, and Stefanie Klaves backed her up with a close 2nd place finish. Renee Walters’ 15.35 was good for 5th. Nicholas Funk finished his 100 meter race in just 12.08 to win. Jeremy Marek’s 13.34 was good for 5th. Zebulon Caspers, wearing Noah Evans’ shoes and filling in for Danny Wickman, was 6th. DASH long-time star Andrea Beck led from start to finish in the 1600 meter race. The much anticipated boys 1600 race was next. The Eagles’ Dalton Rasmussen pushed the pace hard from the start and led for most of the race, but could never shake our own Jacob Dickman who stayed just a step behind. Jacob took over down the homestretch and raced to victory in just 4:49. Justin Chu stayed with the leaders through three laps, and was able to lower his personal record to 5:03. The race was as exciting as the times reflect. Our girls 4×200 team of Renee Walters, Stefanie Klaves, Jessy Homa, and Andrea Coulter raced out to the lead and ended up winning by over 12 seconds. In the 400, Johannah Lee and Bekka Homa placed 3rd and 4th. Samuel Lee followed with a 4th place finish in the boys race. In the 4×100 relay, the girls team of Nina Smrecek, Stefanie Klaves, Bekka Homa, and Andrea Coulter fell behind a good Eagles team, but ended up catching up near the end. It turned out the Eagles had missed a handoff so victory was ours. The boys team races a good Wisconsin School for the Deaf team. Jeremy Marek ran the first turn. On the second leg, Danny Wickman put us in the lead. Zebulon Caspers, running in socks, kept us a step ahead around the last turn, and Nicholas Funk would not be passed in the last 100. It took a DASH record 51.62 to win the race by less than a second. Andrea Beck, running with little rest, posted a good time of 2:45 to win the girls 800. Zipporah Caspers’ 2:58 placed 3rd, and Jessy Homa finished 5th. Also running without much of a break, Justin Chu’s 2:21 time was good for 3rd. Noah Evans and Samuel Lee placed 5th and 6th. Nina Smrecek won the first 200 heat and placed 4th, with Bekka Homa right behind in 5th. Kayla Bruton finished in under 29 seconds to claim another win. Nicholas Funk’s 25.68 200 time gave him another big 1st place finish. Danny Wickman won a close battle for 2nd with a nice time of 26.95. Jeremy Marek gave us 3 of the top 4 with his 27.78. Andrea Coulter and Jacob Dickman competed in the 3200. Both claimed easy victories, with Jacob even lapping the field. In the 4×400, Renee Walters was not feeling well and we fell behind the Eagles team after one lap. Zipporah Caspers kept us in about the same position through the second leg. Then Kayla Bruton took the baton, and with an inspired charge got the team within just a few steps of the Eagles. That was close enough for Andrea Beck to claim the lead around the first turn and hold on for one last victory. Kayla and Andrea had not been beaten all day. The boys team of Justin Chu, Danny Wickman, Noah Evans, and Jacob Dickman did not fare as well and settled for 2nd.

The girls came out on top in the team standings, but our good boys team just did not have enough athletes on hand to rack up the points needed for them to win. Overall this proved to be a very successful season with many DASH records being set. We should have almost all of our top stars coming back next year, and a good group of 8th graders moving up to join them. The future looks bright for this team.

Thanks to all the parents who, eventually, got the athletes to the meet in Delavan. Thanks to Mr. Beck for his help with the coaching. Thanks to the folks at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf for giving us one last meet to compete in. And thanks to Faith Caspers who took the majority of the photos. We still have the end-of-the-year party next week, and then cross country training all summer and into the fall. We will have time to reflect on our year of racing in November. We need to keep working until then.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
