DASH Middle School Track 2015 Milwaukee Invitational Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

Our big middle school track and field team completed their season last Saturday at Quad Park in Milwaukee. The meet is hosted by St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Wauwatosa, and is timed by Marquette University High School. That combination gets this meet running smooth, and it gets us the results just minutes after the meet is completed. This meet also gives out great awards, but with 17 teams on hand this year to compete for them, we would have to be fast to get our fair share. The weather turned out to be warmer than usual, so the times were not as fast as they could have been. But overall, the team competed at a very high level, leaving us as one of the teams whose awards hardly fit in their container.

In field events, the team had another exceptional day. In the softball throw, Caleb Alles went over 100 feet to place fourth, with Tyler Howard throwing 90 feet, and Joshua Lipski coming in at 75. Elijah Anumolu threw 89 feet in the 6th grade competition. For the girls, Alexa Dawson’s 89’02’ throw was the 2nd best in DASH history. Annika Lipski threw the ball past 50 feet, and Julianna Caspers threw it the farthest among our little girls. In the discus, Caleb Alles was back impressing us with his 53 foot throw. The throw earned him the 2nd place medal, just missing first by half an inch. The 1st place thrower could have been called for a fault, but middle school meets almost never do that. Elijah Anumolu and Joshua Lipski also landed good throws over 40 feet. Emma Taylor has the discus release technique down and earned the 8th place ribbon with her 45 foot throw. In the shot put, Zachary Werner had a good throw of over 20 feet. Joshua Anumolu muscled a throw of 27 feet to place 8th. Katrina Lipski had a good throw of 16 feet for the girls. In the long jump, Noah Howard’s 11’10” jump was six inches farther than any other 5th grade boy. Jeffrey Breiling came in at exactly 10 feet. Joshua LeSac jumped 10’10” in the 6th grade division, and John Klaves got his big day started with a 14’3″ leap to place 3rd among the 8th graders. Madelyn Zielinksi was the best of our 5th grade girl long jumpers. Kayla Walters had a season best 12’6″ jump to place 5th, and Faith Caspers, jumping for the first time this year, placed 8th with an 11’09.50″ leap.

In our previous two large meets, the team had plenty of 2nd place finishes, but we never had anyone able to earn a 1st place award. That would be accomplished this time in the first race of the day, the 5th grade girls 1600. Julianna Caspers ran her first two laps in 2nd place, well back of 1st. In the third lap she kept her eye on the leader and started closing the gap. Then on the bell lap, (yes, they really have a bell at this meet), she showed off her finishing kick at the 200 mark, startling the leader as she went past, and pulling away from everyone to give the team a big victory, finishing in 6:42. Grace Caspers also ran well posting a 7:52. Faith Caspers had a 6th place finish in the 8th grade race, with Katrina Lipski working hard behind her to place 9th in 7:26. Noah Howard and Jeffrey Breiling give the team a pair of 1600 runners like we have never had before. Noah raced in in just 6:04 to place 4th, with Jeffrey posting an impressive 6:21 time to place 7th. In past years they may have gone 1-2 with those times. Joshua LeSac raced to the 6th place ribbon and Daniel Caspers finished 9th in the 6th grade race. Our sprinters came out next for the 100 meter races. Emily Zielinski placed 4th with her 15.90. Madelyn Zielinski, racing in the same heat, posted a nice 17.20 time. Abbey Novak won her heat and placed 8th overall. Kayla Walters had the fastest girls time of 15.42 to place 10th. Salim Lubbad lived up to his role as the teams’ star sprinter with his 8th place 15.80 run. Tyler Howard and Micah Chan also ran well. Timmy Ebert was our best 6th grader, and Luis Rosario finished his 7th grade race in 14.91 to place 9th. John Klaves warmed up with a 100 meter 14.12 to finish 8th overall. In the 4×400 relay, Abbey Novak got the 5th grade team into the lead after the first lap. 2nd graders Angela Walters, Grace Caspers, and Julianna Caspers kept us very competitive the next three laps and the team finished in 5th place. Abby Chu got the 8th grade team into 2nd place after one lap. Then Faith Caspers and Emma Taylor withstood numerous challenges and held our position. Kayla Walters ran the anchor lap and got passed for a short time, but then she showed off her speed at the end. The 2nd place medals were ours. Our 5th grade boys team of Salim Lubbad, Nathanael Chu, Alexander Taylor, and Noah Howard placed 6th, as did our 6th grade team of Timmy Ebert, Joshua LeSac, Caleb Alles, and Daniel Caspers. Our 8th grade team of John Klaves, Joshua Anumolu, Thomas Breiling, and Zachary Werner finished in 5:13 to place 2nd. In the 800, Julianna Caspers and Abbey Novak both ran to personal bests and placed 6th and 7th. Faith Caspers broke 3 minutes and placed 4th. Abby Chu clearly enjoyed her first 800 run and earned the 7th place ribbon. John Klaves and Joshua Anumolu finished just a second apart again in the 800. This time John crossed the line first in just 2:33 to place 2nd. In the 200 meter races, Emily Zielinski’s fast 34.06 time was good for 5th place. Madelyn Zielinski had an amazing 36.59 time to place 14th. Sierra Dawson stayed ahead of Mary LeSac, Jenna Walters, and Becca Werner to win a fun heat. Alexa Dawson placed 7th in the 6th grade division with her 33.47 time. Stephanie Chu won her heat with a 33.50 to place 9th. Kayla Walters finished 4th overall in a very close 8th grade race. It took a personal best 31.88 to hold everyone off. Salim Lubbad and Alexander Taylor raced in the same heat, and kept an eye on each other. Salim finished just ahead and earned the 6th place ribbon. Caleb Alles beat Nathanael Chu, Micah Chan, and Andre Coulter to the finish in an earlier heat. In the 400, Abbey Novak raced around in 1:24 to place 6th. Grace Caspers stayed ahead of Angela Walters in the same heat. Stephanie Chu won her heat of the 400 in 1:25. Rebekah Melder was right behind with a 1:30. Kayla Walters stayed a step ahead of Abby Chu in their 400 heat. Noah Howard placed 8th with a 1:17 time. Alexander Taylor came in ahead of Nathanael Chu and Tyler Howard in the previous heat. John Klaves and Joshua Anumolu were back to battle each other in the last 400 heat. John was again a second ahead with a 1:08 to place 3rd, with Joshua finishing 5th. The 4×100 relay had arrived. Grace Caspers, Angela Walters, Mary LeSac, and Sierra Dawson posted a great time of 1:19 to place 9th. Our good 6th grade team of Stephanie Chu, Emily Zielinski, Abbey Novak, and Alexa Dawson finished in just 1:03 to earn the 3rd place medals. We had two good 5th grade boys teams. Salim Lubbad, Alexander Taylor, Tyler Howard, and Noah Howard finished in 3rd, just .19 seconds out of 2nd. The team of Nathanael Chu, Joshua Lipski, Micah Chan, and Andre Coulter looked fast and finished 6th. I always make sure to get our 8th graders into a 4×100 at the end, giving us one last chance to cheer for them as middle schoolers. Abby Chu, Kayla Walters, Katrina Lipski, and Faith Caspers raced around the track one last lap in 1:04. 8th graders John Klaves and Joshua Anumolu were joined by Joshua LeSac and Daniel Caspers for their last race as middle schoolers. The high school team beckons.

This was our biggest middle school team we have every fielded, getting me to pay for two teams at three of the meets to fit everyone in. It will also go down as one of our youngest teams, and as one of our best. The team proved too big to ever get everyone together for a team picture which is unfortunate. We hardly had time to get a bite to eat without missing an event. Our 10th year as a team is now complete. Having a big team like this was just a dream when we started. I know we are recognized by others as having one of the good teams, which makes all the work worth it.

Thanks to all the parents who made it through another all day meet. Thanks to the athletes for letting me run them so hard. Thanks to the high school team who have been volunteered to help with the field events and timing at last three middle school meets, especially Zipporah Caspers, Samuel Zinkgraf, Stefanie Klaves, Nina Smrecek, Andrea Beck, Renee Walters, and Andrea Coulter. The photos turned out great. Make sure to thank my wife, the camera lady, and Zipporah Caspers for their efforts. Capturing the middle school team in photos is a lot of work. Thanks to all the DASH fans for cheering the team on, especially those that come wearing DASH yellow. The end-of-the-year party is tomorrow, and then we gear up for cross country. It is always fun. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
