DASH High School Track 2016 Waukesha South Indoor Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school team competed in the Ed Dwyer Invitational at Waukesha South High School last Saturday. Our team has grown to the extent that for the first time the DASH roster had to be limited to varsity athletes. We would get to see how our varsity team stacks up against the mostly Division 1 school competition.

We ran teams in all eight of the relay events. The girls 4×800 team of Andrea Beck, Faith Caspers, Kayla Walters, and Zipporah Caspers had their sights set upon the DASH record.  And the girls got the day’s racing off to a great start with their 11:33 time smashing the record by 22 seconds. The boys 4×800 team of Justin Chu, John Klaves, Samuel Zinkgraf, and Drake Hacker all ran to about their personal bests to place 6th overall with a 9:53 time.  Our girls 4×160 and 4×240 teams kept within just a few seconds of the other teams, which is not easy against the exclusively large school competition.  The boys 4×160 team also ran to a respectable time and kept it close. The boys 4×240 team of Brian Durbin, Will Farrell, John Klaves, and Samuel Zinkgraf beat their seed time and gave us a hard fought 5th place finish.  The girls 4×400 team of Abby Chu, Kayla Walters, Faith Caspers, and Andrea Beck raced to a very nice early season time of 4:53. The DASH record watch is on for that event. And the boys 4×400 team of Justin Chu, John Klaves, Ben Hughes, and Jacob Dickman placed 7th overall giving us our final 2 team points of the day.

In the individual running events, Grace Zinkgraf got things started with a 12th place finish in the 55 meter high hurdles. In the 55 meter race, Abby Chu and Nina Smrecek ran in the low 9’s, and Kayla Bruton really looked strong with her 8.19, good for 11th place. For the boys 55 meters, freshmen Brian Durbin and Westley Marek got a first taste of varsity competition. Senior Jeremy Marek’s 7.77 was the team’s best. In the mile, Katrina Lipski ran much more controlled and lowered her time from last race by 28 seconds. Faith Caspers ran to a respectable 6:46. Andrea Beck ran in the fast heat and was pulled along to a DASH indoor record of 6:06. Tim Kowalinski finished his mile in just over 6 minutes.  Joe Maurer really looked good, getting through 10 laps in 5:34. In the last heat of the boys mile, Jacob Dickman did much of his work from the front before settling for 3rd place overall. His 4:55 time bodes well for another big season from Jacob. In the 400, Johannah Lee won her heat once again with a 1:17. Abby Chu was next. I had her with a 1:13, but PTTiming did not have her effort listed.  Kayla Walters followed Abby and lowered her outdoor 400 record to 1:12. This is a good group of 400 meter girls.  For the boys, Ben Hughes finished just ahead of Joe Maurer, but was disqualified after cutting into lane 1 too early.  Joe finished with a 1:08 coming off his mile run. Paul Harty raced in with a 1:06 time in his first high school race. In the 800 meters, Katrina Lipski cut off 24 seconds from her last race. Jessy Homa finished with what looked to me like a routine 3:06. Look for her to dip under 3 minutes this year. In the next 800 heat, Zipporah Caspers raced to a personal best 2:55, a little faster than her 4×800 split. John Kowalinski ran very well in his 800 heat finishing in 2:43. Justin Chu got caught in the outside lanes much of the way, but still managed a 2:24. Jacob Dickman’s personal best 2:15 had him winning his heat.  Meg Mazza, after running two relays, settled for a 35.15 in the 200 meter race. Kayla Bruton’s 31.10 was the teams best 200 time once again. Will Farrell looked fast in his 200 heat. Then Samuel Zinkgraf and Jeremy Marek went head to head with Samuel posting a strong 28.23 time. We will see more of Samuel in the 200 this year. Drake Hacker, after a long break from the 4×800, was well rested for the 20 laps of the 3200. He finished in just 11:57 to place 4th overall. John Kowalinski followed in 9th place.

In field events, Nina Smrecek added another foot to her throw from the first meet to top out at 22 feet. Renee Walters put her shot to the 24’11” mark. Renee then went over to triple jump for the first time and placed 8th overall with her 26 foot effort. Johannah Lee triple jumped just past 24 feet. In the long jump, Kayla Bruton and Kayla Walters both had season best 13’07” leaps, with Kayla Bruton coming out a half inch longer. Faith Caspers jumped to a personal best 12’7″. Ben Hughes struggled throwing the 12 pound shot for the first time. Brendan Sanchez was thrust into the shot put area as he arrived and threw it past the 25 foot mark. We found another thrower. Samuel Zinkgraf went past 30 feet with his throw, and now has the DASH record in his sights. Our boy long jumpers had a very good day. Westley Marek leapt over 14 feet, while Jeremy Marek landed his best at 15’6″. Freshman John Klaves went a foot past his middle school DASH record with his 15’11” effort.

With so many great results, this meet was very encouraging.  Our returning athletes are starting the season with similar results to their personal bests from last season. Add in a promising bunch of newcomers, and we have ourselves a very full, competitive team. We have not peaked yet, and still have plenty of things to work on, but there is no doubt we are fielding our strongest team yet. It will be a fun year to be a DASH fan.

Thanks to Ed Beck and Chuck Maurer for help with the coaching duties. It was nice that we had our spot on the bleachers with everyone staying together and enjoying each others company between events. That helped things go smoothly. Thanks to the Waukesha South coaching staff for inviting us. They have been good to us since the beginning. Thanks to the picture people, rookies Julianna and Grace Caspers, and my wife. The rookies did a much better job this time with the photos, and will hopefully get better each meet. We did miss the boys 200, but that was my fault. I watched the races with the camera around my neck, forgetting to call the girls over. Now the outdoor season is ahead of us. We have two weeks to prepare. Let’s make the most of it.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
