DASH High School Track 2016 Watertown Gosling Open Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school track and field team was in Watertown yesterday for the Gosling Open. This is a no-relay meet. It is like an early season time trial where the athletes compete in their key events. The coach then uses the results to help him fill out the rosters properly for the big meets ahead. Our team isn’t small anymore, and we have plenty of results to mention in this meet report. I will hit on them all methodically, so you get a sense of what this team can do.

In the 1600, senior Andrea Beck started her outdoor season off with a 6:04. Faith Caspers ran to a conservative 6:42. Zipporah Caspers and Katrina Lipski came in over 7 minutes. The boys were especially good. Jacob Dickman finished 4th overall with a 4:50. Justin Chu and Drake Hacker finished right behind Jacob with impressive 5:06 and 5:08 times. Joe Maurer ran to a nice 5:32 time and then saved himself for soccer. Grace Zinkgraf posted a 22:16 in the 100 hurdles. She is not far from the DASH record. In the 200, Kayla Bruton ran a fast low 29, not far from her personal record. Zoe Smith eased up at the end, and still finished in 30.98. Nina Smrecek has never looked better and finished in a personal best 31.45. Meg Mazza gave us a fourth girl under 32 seconds and then iced her sore shins. If we can keep Meg healthy, these four girls should smash the DASH 4×200 record soon. Johannah Lee’s 32.76 was better than expected. She is going to have a great season. Hannah Forget finished .01 seconds ahead of Grace Zinkgraf, each with very low 34 times. Our girl sprinters can run. An under-seeded Samuel Zinkgraf easily won his 200 heat. His 25.68 time puts him within reach of the DASH record. Jeremy Marek edged his personal record, which kept him just ahead of the next five DASH athletes. Will Farrell, Ben Hughes, Ben Bridge, Westley Marek, and Brian Durbin finished in that order with all of them running in the 28’s, starting with Will’s 28.00. Seth Holter posted a 30.95 in his first high school race. In the 800, Andrea Beck’s 2:46 led the girls. Kayla Walters posted a routine 2:53. Abby Chu broke 3 minutes for the first time with her 2:58. Zipporah Caspers hit 3 minutes this time, with Faith Caspers and Jessy Homa staying in the low 3 minute range. Katrina Lipski was just over 3:30. For the boys 800, Jacob Dickman caught Briton Kostrzewa on the second lap and finished just a step ahead with both boys posting 2:12 times. Jacob and Briton left everyone else behind them to finish an amazing 1-2 overall. Justin Chu raced to a personal best 2:18, and Drake Hacker easily won the first heat with his 2:25. If we get these four together in the 4×800, the DASH record could fall by as much as 30 seconds. Nolan Giles-Pufahl looked good while posting a 2:49 in his first high school race. Brendan Sanchez, also in his first race, was right behind Nolan with a 2:52. Johannah Lee gave great effort and just missed going under a minute in the 300 hurdles. In the 100, we had both Kayla Bruton and Zoe Smith line up in the last heat. They proved they belonged running against the fastest girls as they both posted nice mid-14 times. Nina Smrecek won her heat with an impressive 15.15. Meg Mazza was right behind Nina until taking nasty spill just before the finish. She came back from the trainer with two bandaged knees. Oh, to have Meg in better health! Grace Zinkgraf and Renee Walters both posted descent times around 16 seconds. Abby Chu got a bonus 100 and raced to a 16.24. Hannah Forget finished with a high 16. For the boys, Samuel Zinkgraf powered his way through 100 meters in just 12.51. Jeremy Marek finished with a respectable 13.67. Ben Hughes made his case to be a sprinter with his 13.81, with Will Farrell just a tenth of second behind Ben. Brian Durbin’s 14.09 won his early heat, and kept him just ahead of Ben Bridge and Westley Marek. Seth Holter and Brendan Sanchez finished with mid-15 results. Nolan Giles-Pufahl eased in with a 16.61. The 400 is the last race of the day and I always sign up plenty of athletes for it. For the girls, Andrea Beck got into the last heat and posted a 1:10 for 6th overall. Kayla Walters ran a 1:13. Once again routine for Kayla. Abby Chu ran to a personal best 1:13. Faith Caspers and Johannah pushed each other to 1:15 and 1:16 times. Zipporah Caspers and Jessy Homa stayed close in their heat, finishing with 1:17’s. Kayla Bruton joined them with her own 1:17. Katrina Lipski finished her 7th lap of the day in 1:34. For the boys, Briton Kostrzewa raced around the track in just 57.31. The DASH 400 record watch is on. Samuel Zinkgraf, Justin Chu, and Drake Hacker all set personal 400 records with their 1:01 times. Brian Durbin and Ben Bridge looked fast and got the coach excited while posting 1:03 and 1:04 times. Ben Hughes raced in with a 1:07. Will Farrell and Brendan Sanchez both finished in 1:15, and Nolan Giles-Pufahl jogged to a 1:39.

In field events, Renee Walters missed her dash record by an inch in the shot put, and tied her DASH record in the discus. In triple jump, Renee bested her personal record by 2 inches. That is consistency. Zoe Smith threw the shot for the first time and put it out 22-06. Nina Smrecek’s shot landed just under 20 feet, and Katrina Lipski and Meg Mazza posted 16 foot throws. Grace Zinkgraf threw the discus over 61 feet, with Zipporah Caspers best throw landing just over 55 feet away. Kayla Walters finished 5th overall with her 12-09 long jump. For some reason the long jump results for all the teams came out shorter than their previous indoor jumps. Grace Zinkgraf was next with her 11-08 jump, followed by Faith Caspers, Johannah Lee, Hannah Forget, and Abby Chu, all going over 11 feet. Kayla Bruton only topped out at 10-05 this time. Johannah Lee went past the 25 foot mark in the triple jump. For the boys, Jeremy Marek broke the DASH record with his 77 foot discus throw. He was also our best long jumper at 15-03. Samuel Zinkgraf threw his shot over 30 feet again, and had his discus go 63 feet. Ben Bridge had a nice 26-08 shot put throw, and also broke a long standing DASH triple jump record with his 29-11.75 effort. Brendan Sanchez’ best shot put throw was 24-04. Will Farrell went past 71 feet as a rookie discus thrower. Seth Holter, also a rookie, had an impressive 63 foot throw. Drake Hacker came it at 55 feet. Briton Kostrzewa long jumped 14-09 at the end of the day. Brian Durbin and Westley Marek both also landed past 14 feet, and Nolan Giles-Pufahl came in at 10-11.

That is a lot of results to go through, but it was important that we did so many events. Now we know a lot more about where this team is right now heading into the busy part of our schedule. We have never had such a big, or such a talented team. If we can keep improving, and I can get the athletes into the correct events, the season is going to be special. You will not want to miss it.

Thanks to Ed Beck for his help with the coaching. He was the one doing most of the work getting the athletes where they needed to be. Thanks to all those who made the trek to Watertown. It was nice seeing so many DASH fans. Thanks to the picture girls, Julianna and Grace Caspers for taking the photos. We have another big Saturday meet this week, and a 3-meet week after that. It is time to stay healthy and be ready. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
