DASH Middle School Track 2016 WI School for the Deaf Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH middle school track team got their season off to a great start at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf last Monday. Our main competition was one of our natural rivals, the Homeschool Eagles from the Beloit/Janesville area. The Eagles are stacked this year with plenty of very good 8th graders, and with the meet format throwing everyone together into one 8th and under division, we would have our work cut out for us, especially our very young girls team. The weather was an amazingly warm 80 degrees. It was a great day to race.

Field events were first on the agenda. Emma Taylor threw her discus over 46 feet to finish 3rd overall, and Annika Lipski topped out at 37-7 to finish 5th. Tikvah Schlissel, in just his first track meet, set a DASH discus record with a throw of 80’05”. Bryant Farrell and Joshua Lipski gave us a 2-3-4 finish in the discus with their great throws. Annika Lipski gave us the 2nd place points in the shot put, with a much improved Jenna Walters placing 7th. Bryant Farrell gave us another 3rd place result with his shot put effort. Jared Aguilar, Andrew Mazza, and Luke Smrecek gave us 4 in the top 7. The boys long jumpers were amazing. We had 7 of the top 9 jumpers, with 5 of our boys going past the 12 foot mark. Vincent Maurer, Sean Seraphine, and Ethan Blischke all jumped past 12-04. Elijah Edlund made it over the 13 foot mark, and Alex Hilbelink jumped over two feet farther than everyone with his 15-07 mark, smashing the DASH record in the process. Alexa Dawson’s 12-4 jump earned her 2nd place honors. Stephanie Chu topped out at 10-06, and Julianna Caspers led our young girls with a nice 8-09 leap. It was an impressive first meet for our field event stars.

Emma Taylor got the day’s running events started with her 3rd place finish in the hurdles. Alex Hilbelink found the hurdles to be a minor hindrance in his race to the finish line. It would be another easy victory for our new star. Ethan Blischke and Tikvah Schlissel gave us 3 of the top 4 hurdlers, with Daniel Caspers also hurdling well. In the 100 meter race, Alexa Dawson finished in 14.50 to place 2nd. Stephanie Chu had a fast 14.87 time for a very close 5th. Our 3rd graders showed off their speed, with Zaela Schlissel coming in a little ahead of Mary LeSac and Angela Walters. Alex Hilbelink won the 100 meter race by over a second to give him his 3rd victory of the day. Tikvah Schlissel gave us a 1-2 finish with his 14.70 time. Alexander Taylor, Micah Chan, and Andrew Mazza all finished in the 16’s. We had four 3rd grade and under girls do the hard work of running the 1600. Julianna Caspers raced the four laps in 6:49, to finish 4 seconds out of 2nd, behind only two 8th graders. Grace Caspers edged Julia Kowalinski by a second on the home stretch, and Hellena Hacker gave us 4 in the top 8. Our young girls get the coach excited! Vincent Maurer got out fast and stayed fast through his 4 laps. His nice 5:42 time was good for second. Kaden Hacker and Joshua LeSac stayed close the whole way, with Kaden finishing just ahead with his 6:33. In the 4×100, our young girls team of Elena Lezala-Montoya, Madelyn Zielinski, Savanna Bruton, and Emily Zielinski edged our even younger girls team of Angela Walters, Mary LeSac, Zaela Schlissel, and Jenna Walters. We got 2nd and 3rd place out of the 4 teams. Our boys 4×100 team of Alexander Taylor, Sean Seraphine, Joshua LeSac, and Elijah Edlund won by 5 seconds to give the boys another victory. Our second boys team of Luke Smrecek, Nathanael Chu, Micah Chan, and Bryant Farrell posted a nice 1:10 time. In the 400, Emma Taylor and Stephanie Chu have never run better. Their impressive 1:14 and 1:15 times put them 2nd and 3rd overall. Annika Lipski lowered her 400 time by 13 seconds from last year. Jared Aguilar never slowed as he raced around the track in just 1:03 to win the boys 400 by three seconds. Elijah Edlund posted a 1:09 to place fourth. Ethan Blischke and Nathanael Chu also impressed the coach with their 1:12 and 1:19 times. Alexa Dawson blew past everyone on the turn and went on to win the 200 by over a second. Emily Zielinski’s time of 32.22 was just fast enough to earn the 4th place points. Madelyn Zielinski looked much better than she has in practice and finished 8th. For the boys 200, Jared Aguilar was a winner once again with his 28.58 time. That’s 2 victories for Jared in the last 2 events for those of you keeping score. Tikvah Schlissel and Sean Seraphine gave us 3 of the top 4. It was a good showing from our sprinters. Rebecca Dickman was on hand to run the 800. She led from start to finish and had no problem breaking 3 minutes with her impressive 2:51 time. Julianna Caspers’ effort was good for 7th. Vincent Maurer, Ethan Blischke, and Kaden Hacker gave us a 1-2-3 finish in the boys 800. Vincent’s 2:39 solo effort was impressive. Ethan and Kaden were the only other boys to break 3 minutes. The Eagles boy stars were mysteriously inactive. The 4×200 was the last event of the day. We had a good girls team of Emma Taylor, Emily Zielinski, Stephanie Chu, and Alexa Dawson, but they missed a handoff. Our 2nd team of Elena Lezala-Montoya, Savanna Bruton, Madelyn Zielinski, and Zaela Schlissel  edged the last Eagles team for 3rd place. The boys 4×200 turned out to be a blockbuster. The Eagles had basically conceded the 200 and 800 to us, stacking their team for one last attempt to keep up with us. Our team of Jared Aguilar, Tikvah Schlissel, Elijah Edlund, and Alex Hilbelink, all running in their first DASH track meet, were left the task of keeping up with the well-rested, long-time Eagles stars. Jared Aguilar gave us a great start before handing off the baton to Tikvah. Tikvah kept us close, but we fell a few steps back. Elijah Edlund then went stride for stride with the Eagles runner on the third leg, but with us running in the outer lane we had some ground to make up. Alex Hilbelink took the handoff from Elijah and showed off his speed to even the race heading to the home stretch. I think Alex may have gotten a step ahead for a while, but then the Eagle anchor regrouped and kept Alex a half-step behind the rest of the way. The boys would have to settle for ending up ahead in the team points. We’ll take a team victory over a relay any day. Our much less watched second 4×200 boys relay team of Sean Seraphine, Andrew Mazza, Daniel Caspers, and Ethan Blischke bested the 2nd Eagles team to place 3rd overall to end a great day of DASH racing.

It was nice to finally see the middle school team in action. The team had a lot of its stars from last year either not return or move up to the high school team. We were able to add plenty of new stars, but with all the cold weather in practice, it was hard to tell how good the team was going to be. I think we got the answer we were hoping for. We definitely have an exciting middle school season in store for us once again. You will not want to miss it.

Thanks to Pete Dickman for his help getting the distance runners ready, and for the general coaching help he provides the team. Thanks to the parents for making the drive to Delavan and helping me get the athletes out to their events. It was easier than usual. Thanks to the Wisconsin School for the Deaf for hosting another great meet, and for being flexible on the meet date. Thanks to the camera lady for getting the photos. Veteran photographer Faith Caspers also helped with the photos near the end, but she proved to be a little rusty during the 800. We still have six high school meets, and six middle school meets left on the schedule. It is time to get ready for the busy weeks ahead. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
