DASH High School Track 2016 St John NW Military Academy Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH high school track and field team was on display in Delafield last Saturday competing in a small-team meet at St John’s NW Military Academy. Our team is pretty big compared to many of the other teams at this meet, but we would be missing about a third of our athletes due to a speech and debate tournament and to injuries. Everyone available would be kept busy, with the coach setting up the roster to collect our fair share of team points, realizing that we had a very good chance of collecting a team trophy if we were at our best. The weather was a perfect 60 degrees with a slight north east wind. It was a day to push ourselves to some personal bests.

We were the only team able to compete in every relay, but just barely. Our 4×800 team of Abby Chu, Faith Caspers, Jessy Homa, and Zipporah Caspers did the 8 laps in 11:54 to place third. Abby Chu’s 2:51 split got us off to a great start. The boys team of Drake Hacker, Tim Kowalinski, Paul Harty, and John Kowalinski posted a 10:01 time for 4th. Our sprinting duo of Kayla Bruton and Zoe Smith finished 4th and 5th overall in the 100 meters, both with season best times in the low 14’s. Andrea Beck got her day off to a great start with an inspiring 5:47 time in the 1600. That would give Andrea 1st place honors. Faith Caspers got her time down to 6:37 to place 6th, and Katrina Lipski gave us 3 in the top 8. In the boys 1600, Tim Kowalinski lowered his time by 23 seconds with a 5:44. Drake Hacker finished in a fast 5:13 to place 9th. Five boys broke 5 minutes, including our own Jacob Dickman, who lowered his personal best time to 4:46 to place 2nd overall, behind only former DASH star Christian LeSac. In the 4×200, our girls team of Nina Smrecek, Zoe Smith, Jessy Homa, and Kayla Bruton raced to victory by 7 seconds and nipped the DASH record in the process. Nolan Giles-Pufahl, as a last minute replacement, joined Westley Marek, Ben Hughes, and Jeremy Marek in the 4×200. The boys looked good and gave us the 4th place points. We placed 3 girls in the top 8 in the 400. Emily Czaplewski’s 1:30 was good for 8th, and then in the final heat Johannah Lee raced around in a personal record 1:13 to stay just ahead of Abby Chu. The pair took 4th and 5th overall. Brendan Sanchez shaved 3 seconds off of his 400 time with a 1:12. John Kowalinski raced around in a fast 1:01. We were one girl short for our 4×100 team, at least until DASH veteran Bekka Homa caught the coach’s eye. Arriving to watch sister Jessy run, Bekka answered the call to save the relay team, and was soon donning DASH yellow ready to race. Nina Smrecek got the baton to Bekka who blazed down the backstretch to loud applause before letting Katrina Lipski run the last turn. Emily Czaplewski did the anchor duties and crossed the line in a nice 1:04. We got the 2nd place medals after the team ahead of us was disqualified. Then Bekka went back to being a DASH fan for the day. Nicely played! In the 300 hurdles, Johannah Lee finished an impressive 4th overall. Paul Harty got us excited by winning his hurdles heat. In the 800, Andrea Beck broke her own DASH record with a 2:39, good for 2nd place. Zipporah Caspers raced to a personal best 2:53 in the 800, and gave us 2 of the top 4. John Kowalinski had another good showing with his 2:34 800 time. Jacob Dickman followed with a 2:13 to place 2nd in the second 800 heat. Our girls scored big in the 200. Nina Smrecek won her heat and finished 5th overall with a 31.23 time. Kayla Bruton got off to slow start, but recovered to finish 3rd overall. Zoe Smith had a  very strong start and held down 2nd place before easing up some at the end, finishing in 29.28. It was an impressive 2-3-5 finish for the girls. Ben Hughes, Westley Marek, and Ben Bridge all finished within a second of each other, with Ben breaking 28 seconds and Westley just missing with his 28.05. We fielded three athletes to do the hard work of the 3200. Faith Caspers got off to very good start and held on for a 4th place finish. Katrina Lipski’s great effort gave us 3 more team points with her 6th place finish. Drake Hacker stayed strong and broke 12 minutes again, earning 6th place honors among the boys. The girls 4×400 team of Abby Chu, Johannah Lee, Zipporah Caspers, and Andrea Beck cruised to a 2nd place finish, well ahead of 3rd. Then the boys team of Ben Bridge, Paul Harty, Tim Kowalinski, and Jacob Dickman really impressed with their 4:06 time, putting themselves 2nd overall in the DASH record books.

In field events, Kayla Bruton, Faith Caspers, and Abby Chu all jumped over 12 feet, with Kayla placing 5th overall with her 13-08 leap. The boys also did well with Jeremy Marek topping out 15-08, Westley Marek 14-04, and Nolan Giles-Pufahl 11-03. Zoe Smith, Nina Smrecek, and Emily Czaplewski placed 6-7-8 in the shot put. Ben Bridge was our top thrower, followed closely by Brendan Sanchez. Our girl discus throwers were not spectacular, but Andrea Beck and Zipporah Caspers still took 3rd and 4th overall. Brendan Sanchez ended up being our only discus thrower. Throwing for the first time he landed his best at 49 feet. Johannah Lee got a personal record 25-10 in the triple jump to claim 3rd place, while Ben Bridge went past 30 feet to break his own DASH record.

With so many of our top athletes absent, I was worried that I would be thinking “If only we had so and so here” thoughts all day. But the way the athletes performed from start to finish kept my excitement up, and those negative thoughts at bay. Everyone is improving, and giving great effort. Our team is big enough now that we can turn in a full roster even when short-handed. What more could a coach want? Well, I did want a team trophy for the girls, and we got that too. The girls tallied the most points in the running events, but when the field events were added in, we ended up taking home the 2nd place trophy. The boys ended up 6th out of the 11 teams. It was yet another great day of DASH racing.

Thanks to all the parents and athletes who lined the fence all day cheering the team on. Thanks to the athletes for competing at a level that got the DASH fans to line the fence. Thanks to Ed Beck and Pete Dickman for their much-needed coaching assistance. Thanks to the camera lady, for getting our best batch of photos of the year. Thanks to Faith and Zipporah Caspers for filling in when the camera lady needed a break. Now to prepare for our big 3-meet week ahead, culminating with the Pacer Relays. Trust me, you will not want to miss it. I hope to see you there.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
