DASH Middle School Cross Country 2016 Elkhorn Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH middle school cross country team ended up in Elkhorn on Thursday after the original Wednesday meet date was washed out because of rain. Fortunately, we were able to field most of our stars on the cloudy, warm day. The meet is smaller, only six teams total, but the teams that compete are very good. We would have to be fast to get our fair share of medals at the awards ceremony.

Julianna Caspers led the way for the DASH team in the 7th grade and under race, but she had company. Julia Kowalinski and Heidi Talbert stayed close behind Julianna all the way to the finish as the girls pushed each other to medal winning races. It would be a 9-10-11 place finish for our stars. Seeing Heidi get a medal in just her third race was especially exciting. Joy Rasch raced to a nice 25th place finish as our 4th scorer. Grace Caspers got out a little slow, but then kept a nice pace to finish in 12:54. Hellena Hacker raced for the first time this year. She looked fast, especially at the finish. Mary LeSac forgot her shorts and struggled through the course. She will be better next time when in proper racing attire.

Nathaniel Chu blazed through the 1.5 mile course in just 9:57 to the lead the DASH 7th and under boys. Nathanael put a claim in on the 13th place medal with his strong effort. Leif Kostrzewa finished just a second behind Nathanael to give us a second boy to cheer for at the award ceremony. As Leif finished, Kaden Hacker was running to the finish line. Kaden’s strong race gave us three boys in the top-18. Seka Kostrzewa had an especially good day, finishing the course in just 10:42. Joshua Lipski cut his time down considerably from last year and continues to run well for us. Bryant Farrell ran to an easy 13:24. He showed good finishing kick, and I think is capable of really pushing his times down considerably in the meets ahead. Micah Chan did not look as good as he has earlier in the season. He is practicing well and should be back closer to Joshua next time out.

Stephanie Chu went out with the leaders in the 8th grade girls race as she should have. She ran in third place for almost the whole way, before sneaking into second heading into the home stretch, and then settling for third. Her time of 10:21 was faster than any DASH girl has every run on a 1.5 mile course. She has truly been a star for us this year.

Joshua LeSac went out fast in his attempt to make the medal stand. He was running with a cold, however, which really affected his finish. It would be 23rd overall for Joshua. Daniel Caspers had a great start before settling into a nice pace the rest of the way. He place 32nd overall with his 10:48 time.

We ran 17 athletes, and took home 6 medals. This team is really running well right now, and should be very competitive in the big races ahead. The next two weeks are going to be very exciting. I am really looking forward to seeing this team run again on Monday. I hope to see you there.

Thanks to Mary Beck for again being our official scorer. Thanks to Ed Beck and Joshua Lipski for their help collecting the place cards, filling them out, and turning them in. Thanks to the camera lady for the photos. With all that help, I just ran around the course being a DASH fan. I must admit, it was fun. We only have a few days between meets the rest of the way.  This is the time of year we have been waiting for. Let’s finish up strong.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
