DASH Middle School Track 2017 Milwaukee Invitational Meet Report

Hello DASH families,

The DASH middle school track team completed their season once again at the legendary Quad Park in Milwaukee. It was nice to have them back in action after the previous meet’s rainout. This week the weather was mostly sunny and warm. It would be a good day to get some good times on the fast track.

The 1600 was the first event on the schedule. Julianna Caspers got the team its first top-3 medal with her 3rd place finish. Julia Kowalinski had a personal best 7:20 to place 7th, and Grace Caspers stayed just ahead of Mary LeSac who was running her first 1600 of the year. Joy Rasch did four laps in 7:05 to place 4th among the 6th graders, and Heidi Talbert was just a few paces behind to place 6th. Both Joy and Heidi went well under their personal records. Noah Caspers got his first chance at the 1600. He kept up with the bigger boys for a while and settled for having a better time than his sister. The 7th grade boys race was maybe the best I’ve ever seen with 10 boys going under 6 minutes. Ethan Blischke and Alexander Taylor were both in that group. Well done. Joshua LeSac just missed getting under 6 minutes with his 6:01. In the 100, Madelyn Zielinski placed 3rd overall, and Savanna Bruton won her heat and placed 9th. Hailey Grant came in ahead of Alexa Bruton in another heat. Our little girls were good. Zanna Hughes broke 17 seconds, and Gigi Edlund was clocked at 17.18 in the 6th grade division. Emily Zielinski overcame a slow start and finished 4th overall, and Alexa Dawson had a nice 14.91 time. Simon Smrecek was our fastest 5th grade boy coming in ahead of Johnathan Lipski. Andy Forget had a personal record. Nathan Forget really caught our eye with his 14.55. He can run. Ian Esterle edged Bryant Farrell as they ran side by side in the same heat. Alex Hilbelink’s fast 13.27 was good for 5th place, and Ben Forget finished in 14.73. In the 4×400 our 5th grade girls team of Savanna Bruton, Julia Kowalinski, Angela Walters, and Julianna Caspers posted a low 5:46 time. They looked good. The 6th grade team of Joy Rasch, Heidi Talbert, Jenna Walters, and Zanna Hughes exceeded the coach’s expectations going 15 seconds faster than last time. Our 7th grade boys team of Ethan Blischke, Nathan Forget, Micah McKendrick, and Alexander Taylor were competitive with the 8th grade teams and won the 2nd place medals in their division. Our distance runners were back again for the 800. Julianna Caspers won another 3rd place medal, and Julia Kowalinski was the next runner giving us two in the top 4. Grace Caspers’ time was good for 7th overall. Joy Rasch and Heidi Talbert both won top-8 ribbons in the 6th grade race. Silas Johnson came on strong at the end to move up to 8th. Charlie Johnson did a 3:20. For a 3rd grader that is very good. Joshua Lipski was 13th in the 6th grade race. In a tight 7th grade race, Alexander Taylor stayed with Ethan Blischke the whole way, and came in a step ahead with his 2:43. Joshua LeSac won the 3rd place medal with an impressive showing, and Daniel Caspers’ 3:19 was good for 9th. We have a history of doing well in the 200 at this meet, and this year would be no exception. Madelyn Zielinski had a great surge at the end and was clocked at 33.21. That gave her the victory in the 5th grade division. Angela Walters broke 35 seconds to give us two in the top-6. Julianna Caspers came in just ahead of 3rd grader Hailey Grant. Emily Zielinski came down the home stretch with a nice lead and hung on to win by .02 second. This is the 2nd year in a row Emily has won the 200 at this big meet. Alexa Dawson’s 32.06 was good for the 7th place ribbon. Rebecca Bruton did a nice 33.03. Simon Smrecek was our top 5th grade boy. Micah McKendrick cracked the top-10 in the 6th grade race. Andy Forget had a personal record 33.56. Micah Chan had a seasonal best 36.42. Nathan Forget carried his hat to a 31.93, and Bryant Farrell had a personal record 35.21. Alex Hilbelink did a 27.82 in a very fast 8th grade boys race. In the 400, Angela Walters raced around in just 1:21 to place 4th. Julianna Caspers ran again and did a 1:28. Mary LeSac had a personal record 1:34. Zanna Hughes won the 8th place ribbon with her 1:27. Silas Johnson was 11th with a 1:21. Charlie Johnson did his lap in 1:31 as did Micah Chan. Matthew Schaber was clocked at 1:35. Alex Taylor ran as an 8th grader. His 1:12 put him just ahead of Joshua LeSac and Ben Forget. I signed up seven 4×100 teams so the athletes could get on the track one last time. Our 5th grade girls team of Madelyn Zielinski, Angela Walters, Mary LeSac, and Savanna Bruton placed 4th in a tight race. Our 6th grade team that had but one 6th grader was amazing. Jenna Walters, Hailey Grant, Grace Caspers, and Julianna Caspers did a 1:04 to place 4th. That’s a great time. Our 8th grade team of Rebecca Bruton, Emily Zielinski, Annika Lipski, and Alexa Dawson placed 5th overall with a 1:03. Our girls were fast. Our 5th grade boys team of Simon Smrecek, Charlie Johnson, Noah Caspers, and Silas Johnson won the 8th place ribbons. The 6th grade team of Andy Forge, Micah Chan, Joshua Lipski, and Micah McKendrick placed 6th. Our 7th grade team of Ian Esterle, Ethan Blischke, Alexander Taylor, and Nathan Forget had a descent 1:02 time to place 6th. Our 8th grade boys team of Ben Forget, Daniel Caspers, Joshua LeSac, and Alex Hilbelink did a 1:00 time to finish up the big day of racing.

We also had some field event highlights. Alexa Dawson threw her shot put 23’5″ to place 5th. Our high school team could use that. Annika Lipski placed 11th. Bryant Farrell had a nice 26’9″ throw to place 4th. Luke Smrecek was just over 20 feet, and Matthew Schaber had a personal record 17’3″. Daniel Caspers showed off his muscles with a 21’10” effort. That was three feet farther than Joshua LeSac’s throw. Mary LeSac was our top girl softball thrower. Micah Chan threw his softball 94 feet to earn the 8th place ribbon. Joshua Lipski cracked the top-10 with his 90′ throw. In long jump, Joy Rasch and Gigi Edlund both went over 9 feet, and Alexa Dawson topped out at 10’10”. For the boys, Silas Johnson and Simon Smrecek went past 9 feet, and Charlie Johnson did a 8’7″. Andy Forget broke 10 feet. Ethan Blischke went past 12′, and Alex Hilbelink was measured at 15’10”. Joshua Lipski won the 1st place medal in discus for the second year in a row, this year winning by over 8 feet. Well done.

Another year of track is in the books. That makes 12 seasons now for the DASH team. We had a good group of 8th graders this year. Unfortunately, not all of them will be accepting their invitation to join the high school team next year. We wish them well. The weather is warming up. It is time to start hitting the trails to get ready for cross country. I hope to see you there.

Thanks to Ed Beck for his help with the coaching. Thanks to the big group of DASH fans on hand to cheer the athletes on. Thanks to the camera lady, Zipporah Caspers, and Faith Caspers for getting plenty of photos. And thanks to the Marquette High School crew that hosted the meet and did all the timing. Another great year of DASH racing is in the books.

Take care,
Jim Caspers
